Oral Cancer

Most patients never consider that a regular checkup with their dentist could be life-saving. But the truth is that, with deaths from oral cancer routinely outpacing deaths from cervical or skin cancer, visiting Drum Point Family & Implant Dentistry twice a year for checkups and oral cancer screenings could make all the difference in the world.

It’s been estimated that, when found early, the cure rate for oral cancer is 90%. But because the symptoms of oral cancer are rarely obvious during the early stages, many patients aren’t diagnosed until later, when the cure rate is only about 10%. And what’s more, a quarter of new patients diagnosed today exhibit none of the at-risk of behaviors commonly associated with the disease, such as tobacco use or excessive alcohol consumption.

It’s for all these reasons that Drum Point Family & Implant Dentistry use ViziLite®Plus for all oral cancer screenings. ViziLite Plus is comfortable for patients and lets our dentists identify precancerous and cancerous lesions early, before oral cancer symptoms have become obvious.

Here’s how oral cancer screenings with ViziLite Plus work:

After a standard oral exam has been completed, patients will rinse with the ViziLite Plus Pre-Rinse solution. Then, our dentists will use a special handheld light to perform another oral inspection.  This light, combined with the Pre-Rinse solution, will cause any suspicious areas to glow white. If something is found, we can schedule a follow-up appointment to monitor the suspicious area and, if needed, take further steps to provide life-saving care.
