Post-Treatment Instructions for Periodontal Surgery

1. EATING
A. Do not chew on the side with the dressing.
B. Eat softer foods, such as soups, eggs, cheese,fish,pasta, jello,pudding
C. Avoid hard chewy foods such as bagels. rolls, apples, carrots, steak, etc.
D. Eating a good diet is essential for good healing.

2. BRUSHING
A. Do not brush in the area of the dressing B. Brush other areas as usual

3. RINSING
A. Do not rinse in the area of dressing
B. Starting the day after surgery, rinse 4-5 times a day with salt water, or peridex. If uncomfortable, change the rinse or call us.

4. PAIN
A. Use the prescribed medications as instructed and as needed, remember, medications have side effects. Do not drive or use sharp objects while under the influence of drugs.

5. SWELLING-ICE!!!
Swelling often occurs. It starts on the 2'"' day, peaks on the 3rd, and decreases after the 4th. Placing an ice pack on the face over the area that was treated can control swelling. Do this as soon as you get home and for the next 5-6 hours; 1/2 hour on 15 minutes off. Repeat. Remember, ice only works if used during the first 5-6 hours.

6. DRESSING
Do not be alarmed if a section or even the entire dressing breaks off and the area becomes uncomfortable. If discomfort occurs, call the office

7. BLEEDING
Some oozing of blood is usual for 24 hours

8. NO ALCOHOL
36 Hours, or if taking medication for pain.
