Bruxism

Teeth grinding and clenching—the medical name for which is bruxism—are a natural response to stress and can affect patients day or night, but especially at night, when they are sleep and unable to consciously stop themselves. This is problematic, as bruxism puts strain on a patient’s muscles, tissues, and the jaw, in addition to wearing down teeth and eventually resulting in problems like TMJ dysfunction.

Not sure if you have bruxism? Symptoms include:

·                     Anxiety/stress/tension
·                     Depression
·                     Earache
·                     Eating disorders
·                     Headaches
·                     Insomnia
·                     Sore, painful jaw

At Drum Point Family & Implant Dentistry, our dentists have a non-surgical solution that can help patients beat symptoms of bruxism. It’s called a nightguard.

Nightguards are custom-made for each patient and provide relief by arresting the jaw, preventing it from clenching or grinding. A simple oral evaluation will help our dentists decide if a nightguard is right for you. If it is, all it takes to get started is a quick dental impression, which our lab will use to create your custom-made nightguard. Once your appliance is ready, relief is as simple as wearing your nightguard while you sleep.
